1350434 Austenitic stainless steels USS ENGS and CONSULTANTS Inc 13 April 1971 9291/71 Heading C7A A metastable austenitic stainless steel consists of by weight:- the balance being iron, incidental ingredients, and impurities, and is further limited by having an instability function, defined by the expression 37À193 -51À248 (%C) -1À0174 (%Mn) -2À5884 (%Ni) -0À4677 (%Cr) -34À396 (%N), between 0 and 2À9. Steels satisfying this expression have a tendency to transform to martensite during mechanical deformation, while combining high ductility with a low ultimate tensile strength which assists forming operations.
