Abstract

1349748 Reel brake E A TIMSON 4 Oct 1971 [13 Oct 1970] 48509/70 Heading B8M [Also in Division F2] A reel brake comprises a stationary drum, around which at least one brake shoe rotates, the brake shoe(s) being mounted on a backplate rotating with the reel and urged into contact with the drum by spring means such that the braking force of the shoe(s) varies inversely with the speed of rotation of the backplate . Two such shoes 7, each with three friction pads, are pivoted at one end P and are spring biased to the drum 6 at the other end. As shown the springs 8 are compression springs but tension springs each attached to the pivoted end of an adjacent shoe may be used; also pneumatic springs. The backplate is fixed to a frusto-conical reel end sleeve, rotating on bearings on a fixed spindle and supporting a reel sleeve, and the drum is fixed to the spindle or mounted in a fixed support. Alternatively the spindle rotates and the backplate may be alternatively carried on the spindle, with the drum mounted on a fixed support carrying the spindle.
