Abstract

1,235,143. Bolts. J. LA TORRE, and T. P MAHONEY. 18 July, 1968, No. 34191/68 Heading F2H. A fastener 10 for securing together and stressing two plates 44, 46 comprises a tapered shank portion 14 provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced flutes 22 which extend generally axially of the shank. The fastener 10 which may be headless (Fig. 8, not shown) or provided with a slotted frusto-conical head (Fig. 6, not shown) or a recessed flanged head 12 may be provided with a threaded shank portion 16 which is separated from the tapered shank portion 14 by an annular groove 36. The fastener is arranged to be installed in a cylindrical bore 56 in the plates 44, 46 by rotation in one direction, the flutes being each limited by a leading edge 28 and a trailing edge 30 which are positioned such that the leading edge 28 is nearer to the axis of the shank than the trailing edge 30 so that during installation the tapered shank portion causes the bore to become tapered and the material of the plates around the bore to be stressed. With the fastener installed in the plates 44, 46 a flanged nut 38 may be secured to the threaded portion 16 to tension the fastener or the threaded portion may be located in a blind end of the bore (Fig. 7, not shown).
