Abstract
1,228,566. Particle board. CENTRE INTERNATIONAL POUR L'ECONOMIE ET LA TECHNOLOGIE EN EBREGE I.C.E.T. SOC. COOPERATIVE. 11 March, 1969 [11 March, 1968], No. 12867/69. Heading C3N. A process for the manufacture of boards and panels having at least one layer of a thickness of 0.5 mm.-5 mm. comprises forming a mixture of sawdust having a particle size below 1 mm. and a quantity of an organic binding agent in the solid state ranging between 5 and 15% of the weight of the dry sawdust, spreading the mixture in a layer of such a thickness that a final layer of a thickness ranging between 0À5 and 5 mm. is obtained, and subjecting the layer to a pressure ranging between 80 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and 150 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> at a temperature ranging between 130 and 180 C. The sawdust preferably has a moisture content of 5-15% by weight. The organic binding agent may be a thermosetting resin, e.g. a phenolic resin, a natural resin such as abietic resin or asphalt, lignin, or polyvinyl chloride. The binding agent advantageously contains two or more resins chosen from phenolic, fossil, natural and lignin type. The mixture of sawdust and binding agent may contain 1-5 parts by weight of cement or plaster. In one embodiment the mixture of sawdust and binding agent may be applied to supporting sheet of cellulosic material, e.g. paper impregnated with phenolic resin, or a synthetic plastics material, e.g. polyvinylchloride or a polyolefin. The mixture of sawdust and binding agent may be subjected to a cold precompression at a pressure between 10 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and 40 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> which facilitates the subsequent application of a covering sheet of cellulosic material or synthetic plastics material prior to the hot compression. This cover sheet may be ornamented. The examples produce (a) a board of 1.5 mm. thickness, (b) a panel of 3 mm. thickness decorated on its upper and lower faces with resin-impregnated paper, and (c) a three-component board of overall thickness 20 mm. which has outer layers in accordance with the invention and a central layer produced from sawdust having a particle size above 1 mm.
