Abstract
644,564. Compound sheet materials. AIRSCREW CO. & JICWOOD, Ltd. May 27, 1946, No. 16061. [Class 140] [Also in Group XXIII] Veneered composite boards are prepared by superposing a sheet of adhesive material on a veneer sheet then a mass of sawdust or other comminuted wood partially impregnated with an adhesive binder on the sheet of adhesive material then a further sheet of adhesive material on the mass of comminuted wood and finally a further veneer sheet, the sandwich thus formed being subjected to heat and pressure in a press to consolidate it. The veneer sheets may be of fibrous sheet material such as paper, woven or filled material, fabric gauze, wood veneer or asbestos felt, the comminuted wood may be sawdust, wood chips or wood shavings, and may have mixed with it paper which has been subjected to a defibration process, and the adhesive binder may be casein, Scotch glue, or a synthetic resin of the phenol- or urea-formaldehyde class. The pressure may be from 50 to 450 lbs. per square inch and the temperature from 60‹ to 150‹ C. In the examples : (1) a layer of pinewood chips mixed with urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive is sandwiched between two sheets of asbestos felt and subjected to heat and pressure ; (2) a sheet of Kraft paper is covered with a sheet of phenolic glue film then with a layer of birchwood chips mixed with casein glue, then with a further layer of the glue film, then with a layer of Kraft paper and subjected to heat and pressure, and (3) soft wood chips mixed with a urea-formaldehyde adhesive are sandwiched between sheets of paper lacquered with resin on the side next the chips and subjected to heat and pressure.
