Abstract
1,221,531. Regulating I.C. engines: fuel injectors. FFSA. May 14, 1968 [June 8, 1967], No.22757/68. Heading F1B. [Also in Division G3j Fuel is supplied from a reservoir 1 to a plurality of injectors 11 connected one following another to a conduit 10 by an engine driven fuel pump 2, a fuelflow regulator 8 is provided upstream of the injectors and downstream of the injectors the conduit 10 is connected via a calibrated orifice 12 with the reservoir. Each injector 11 comprises a plunger 17 actuated by an engine cam-shaft and fuel flows to an injection chamber 34 through an inlet passage 27 and a calibrated orifice 15. The regulator 8 comprises a centrifugal governor 43, 44, 45 driven by the engine or a piston (65), Fig.14 (not shown), subjected to the output pressure of the pump 2, which pressure increases as the square of the engine speed, moving a slide valve 36 against the bias of a main spring 50 and a slow running spring 55. The valve 36 controls the inlet 38 to the conduit 10 and the inlet 39 to a by-pass passage 37 leading to the reservoir 1 via a calibrated orifice 13. The main spring loading is controlled by a manually operated member 52 movable between adjustable stops 53 and 54. The regulator housing 48 is filled with fuel and the slide valve disc 47 acts as a damper. To provide excess fuel for engine starting a further spring (58), Fig. 11 (not shown), is disposed between the base of the slowrunning spring housing 49 and the adjacent end of the valve 36, the slow running spring 55 bearing against an apertured washer (47) engageable with a shoulder in the regulator housing. A spring washer (59), Fig.12 (not shown), may be disposed between the slide valve disc 47 and a shoulder (60) in the regulator housing. The main spring 50 may be pre-stressed between the slow-running spring housing 49 and the member 52 by a member (61), Fig.13 (not shown), so that the member 52 controls the position of the slide valve 36 until the governor force exceeds the main spring precompression.
