Abstract

1,217,558. Wrapping packages. R. J. REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO. 16 May, 1968 [16 June, 1967], No. 23435/68. Heading B8C. A blank 32, Fig. 3, for a package, e.g. of cigarettes, having slits 42, &c. comprises non- colinear first and third rectangular panels joined by a second panel. The blank 32 together with a strip 52, e.g. of cardboard or heavy paper having a pressure-thermal adhesive coating, e.g. of polyethylene or wax, on its surface 52a, are folded about an open ended former 50. Gusset fold panels 56, Fig. 4B, 57, Fig. 4A and tuck panel 54 are folded in as shown and then side edges 36a, 36c are overlapped and sealed on the strip 52. The other side of the package 32 is completed in the same way and the package is then removed by pushing, e.g. cigarettes, through the former 50. The package top is closed by folding tuck end panels 70, Fig. 7 (76), Fig. 8 (not shown), underneath tuck end panels 72, 74 (78) (80) with an end of the sealing strip 52 extending through the continuous slit 42, 44 to form a tear tag. Advertising matter is applied to the package. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the cardboard strip 52 is omitted and in order to close the package top, the blank has three flaps (78a, 78b, 78c) at one end, the middle one extending outwardly furthermost, being slit parallel to the blanks side edges at its junctions with the other end flaps. In a further modification, Fig. 18 (not shown), the blank of Fig. 3 has a tab at one end, adjacent the corner, to provide the final tear tag. The strip 52 is again omitted. In another embodiment, Fig. 14 (not shown), the blank comprises a rectangular first panel connected to a second panel whose side edges diverge from the side edges of the first panel and join a third panel, whose edges are parallel to the first panel's side edges, itself joined to a fourth panel whose side edges converge to a fifth panel, co-linear with the first panel. The third panel has a slit adjacent each corner extending inwardly, perpendicular to its side edges.
