Abstract
1297750 Surgical syringe BECTON DICKINSON & CO 19 April 1971 [6 April 1970] 26389/71 Heading A5R A self-contained disposable syringe 20 comprises a barrel 21 having a rear end covered by removable sealing means 26, a needle 22 secured in the front end e.g. by epoxy resin, a plunger 23 comprising a stopper 41 and a rod portion and a needle shield 24, normally in sealing engagement with the forward end of the barrel, the needle shield 24 being removable from the barrel 21 for engagement with the rear end of the plunger to form a handle. The syringe barrel 21 has a reduced forward end portion 27 and an annular skirt 32. The proximal end 47 of the needle shield 24 has a reduced outer diameter compared to the main body portion 45 of the needle shield 24 and fits into a recess 33 so that the skirt 32 is gripped by annular rings 48 on the proximal end 47 of the needle shield 24. The distal end 46 of the needle shield 24 is integrally formed or is closed by a removable sealing means 26. In use, the needle shield 24 is removed and, by either piercing or removing sealing means 26, attached to the barrel with the proximal end 47 of the needle shield 24 frictionally engaged with the lugs 55 of the plunger 23 to form a handle. The rod portion consists of spaced ribs 38' extending almost the length of the plunger 23. The forward end portion of the plunger has a cylindrical projection 38 terminating in a flanged lip 39 which supports the flexible stopper 41. A pair of annular projections 43 on the stopper 41 engage with the inner surface of the syringe barrel 21 to form a seal so that, when the plunger 23 is withdrawn, fluid is drawn into cavity 44 formed between the forward lip of the stopper 41 and the rear end 31 of the needle 22.
