Abstract
1290524 Electromagnetic contactors JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 10 April 1970 [27 May 1969] 26636/69 Heading H1N A combined switch and coupling mechanism for use in an internal combustion engine includes a starter motor 39, a pinion 38 driven by the starter motor and engagable with a toothed wheel 41 on the engine, a solenoid type electromagnet 10 for moving the pinion into engagement with the wheel when its two part armature is axially moved on energization of the solenoid and contacts arranged to be operated on solenoid energization in dependence on the proper engagement of the pinion 38 and wheel 41. The armature parts 34, 35 are coupled by a spring 36 and move together unless the part 35 is prevented from further movement by tooth to tooth engagement of the wheel and pinion. Under these conditions the armature part 34 moves a sleeve which carries a part 22 on which a contact bridge 24 is resiliently mounted and the bridge engages the end 33 of a latch 31 to rock the bridge into engagement with fixed contacts 13; 14 so as to energize one winding of the motor to move teeth of the pinion 38 into alignment with teeth of the wheel 41. As the teeth engage the armature part 35 moves a rod 26 against a spring 27 to engage the latch 31 so that its end 33 moves into a slot in the bridge 24 which is moved by its biasing springs 25 into engagement with a further contact 15 so as to energize further starter motor windings. On de-energization of the solenoid the mechanism is reset by a spring 19. If the teeth engage without difficulty the rod 26 moves the latch 31 so that contact 15 is engaged "fractionally after" contact 14.
