Abstract

The invention relates to electric starting mechanisms for internal-combustion engines of the kind comprising an electric motor having a casing 10, an axially movable armature 14 mounted within the casing and a pinion 21 mounted on the armature shaft and axially movable therewith, the pinion being arranged when the armature is moved in one direction to engage a toothed wheel of the engine, the movement of the armature in the one direction being effected by the magnetic field produced by the poles 12 of the field system of the motor and resilient means 22 for urging the armature in the opposite direction when the motor is de-energized. According to the invention an electromagnet 24 is provided within the casing, the electromagnet having a winding which is arranged to be energized when the motor is energized, means being mounted on the armature shaft or a part secured thereto, the means constituting an armature for the electromagnet whereby when the motor is energized the combined action of the electromagnet and the poles of the field system will be available to move the armature in the one direction. The means may comprise a friction clutch 19 serving to transmit rotary motion between the shaft and the pinion.
