1288337 Umbrellas IDEAL K K 4 Aug 1970 [6 Aug 1969 (3)] 37549/70 Heading A4P An automatically openable and closable umbrella comprises a first shaft member 1 in which upper 2, intermediate 3 and lower 4 members are slidable, a crown 6 on the upper region of member 2 pivotally supporting ribs 5, an upper ring 12 at the top of member 1 pivotally supporting tubular stretchers 14 via auxiliary rods 14a, a slider sleeve 16 pivotally carrying supporting rods 18, and a second slider sleeve 25 pivotally supporting stays 26. A spring 10 urges intermediate 3 and lower 4 members apart and a spring 23 urges upper 2 and intermediate 3 members apart for opening the umbrella, a spring 7 being attached via tension rod 8 to an auxiliary ring 6a to swing the ribs inwardly for closing the umbrella. Opening is initiated by releasing latch 38 which first allows a tip cup 40 to descend by means of a spring 41 and then releases the slider sleeve 25. Closing is initiated by releasing latch 37 which releases the shaft member 1 to move relative to the shaft member 4. The two latches 37 and 38 are operated by means of a rockable button 35. An alternative latch arrangement Figs. 24 to 26 (not shown) has separate latches (44) and (48) for opening and closing respectively. In the initial closed position latch (48) is covered by a member (49). Pins such as 11, 21 &c. serve to inter-connect the operative members of the shaft and act as stops by running in slits such as 19. The spring 10 has a core end 29.
