Abstract

1,271,231. Shaft seals. H. P. CORNELIUS. 24 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 14180/68. Heading F2B. A seal for a piston-rod or propeller shaft comprises a segmented carrier ring 2 and two or more segmented wear rings 10, 14 which are removably held in an annular groove in the carrier ring and engage each other with the gaps between the segments staggered, the carrier ring serving to transmit the resilient force of a spring 20 to the wear rings. The seal-may consist of a cast iron carrier ring and bronze or cast iron wear rings and may be mounted in a groove 24 of a stuffing box, the segments being prevented from moving relatively to each other by means of radial pins 18, each pin being arranged to removably-connect one wear ring segment with one carrier ring segment. When the seal is for a rotary shaft, a helical groove may be provided in the surface of the wear rings in contact with the shaft for returning oil. The seal may be provided with wear rings, each segment of which is of larger radius of curvature than that of the carrier ring at the mutually contacting faces. If desired, the bottom 6 of the groove in the carrier ring may be modified for inclined engagement with the wear rings.
