Abstract

126,557. Pattinson, J. R. Sept. 10, 1918. Regulating; of liquid fuel to valve controlling the passage of liquid fuel to the injector, and the injection valve which controls the admission of liquid fuel and air under pressure to the cylinder, are actuated by solenoids controlled by a switch actuated by the engine, so that the inlet valve is closed later than the fuel-supply valve, whereby all the fuel in the inlet valve passages is blown into the cylinder. The switch, Fig. 2, is mounted on the half-speed shaft and comprises a triangular contact 33, Fig. 4, on the rotating member 31, and stationary brushes 34, 35 in the solenoid circuits of the inlet and fuel valves respectively. The rotating member 31 of the switch is adjusted axially by a speed governor, and angularly by hand to vary the timing of the valves. The valves are opened against spring pressure when the solenoids are energized, and their lift is limited by adjustable stops. The fuel is supplied by a pump from the main tank to a second tank, and there is a return circuit with automatic relief valve. The fuel passes from the second tank to the fuel valve, and thence to a passage in the casing of the air and fuel inlet valve.
