Abstract

1,255,970. Injection moulding. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 17 Dec., 1969 [31 Dec., 1968], No. 61963/68. Heading B5A. In a process for making a laminate having a core and surface skin of dissimilar synthetic resin compositions, wherein a charge of the skin composition is injected into a mould cavity and subsequently a charge of the core composition is injected into the interior of the charge of the skin composition before the latter has set, the mould cavity is filled with the skin composition and then enlarged to allow the core composition to be injected. This enlarging of the mould may be effected by reducing the mould clamping force so that the injection pressure forces the mould halves apart. Alternatively the cavity may be fully enlarged before any of the core composition is injected. If the core composition is a foamable material the cavity is then further enlarged to allow foaming to take place. Three charges of material may be injected the third being of the same material as the first. One or more walls of the mould may be lined with a removable insert e.g. a sheet of wood, hardboard, metal or plastics or a flexible material to be incorporated in the moulded article. Articles specified are furniture, building panels and panels for cars and trains, interior trim for vehicles and seedboxes. Examples are given of suitable thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics and foaming agents. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,156,217.
