Abstract

1,125,630. Carbon fibres. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 3' Nov., 1965 [21 Jan., 1965], No. 46564/65. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions B5, D2 and H5] Electrically conductive carbon fibre material is made by heating regenerated cellulose fibre material impregnated with from 10 to 30% by weight of ammonium chloride to at least 230‹ C. in air or other atmosphere containing free oxygen to give an intermediate black flexible chemically combined nitrogen-containing organic fibre material which is then carbonized' without loss. of fibre identity by heating to a higher temperature than that used to give the' intermediate fibre material' in a non-oxidizing atmosphere for not longer than 30 minutes. The starting material may, be woven or non- woven fabric or a continuous filament tow and may be drawn continuously through heating zones which convert it first to the intermediate fibre material and then to. the electrically conductive carbon' fibre material without intermediate cooling between the heating zones. The non-oxidizing atmosphere may be-nitrogen. A carbonizing temperature of 1300‹ C. is preferably reached and the carbon content increases to at least 95% by weight of the fibre. A carbonizing temperature of at. least 2200‹ C. is preferably employed to obtain fibres of at least 99À5% by weight carbon... Carbon cloth made by this process may be impregnated. with a high-temperature resistant phenolic laminating varnish. and. laminated into. a. composite which is cured under heat and. pressure, and may be used. for making potentiometer elements.. Carbon fibres made by thisprocess containing. 99À5+ % carbon may be incorporated wtih 83% paper-making cellulose fibres,. 10%. asbestos. fibres to form acellulosio. electrical heating element paper.
