Abstract

1,195,404. Injection moulding. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Oct., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 46872/67. Heading B5A. In a method of producing cellular articles in a mould having one or more mould cavities and two mould parts movable towards and away from each other, the mould walls being of resilient material, a foamable thermoplastic composition is injected at its foaming temperature into the mould while the said parts are urged towards each other to compress the walls and reduce the cavity or cavities, after which the pressure urging the parts together is reduced so that the resilience of the wall material expands the cavity or cavities to allow the composition to foam. Examples of moulding compositions include polyethylene, polypropylene, polymers and copolymers of styrene with a suitable blowing agent. The mould may comprise metal backing plates with a resilient cavity containing former e.g. of silicone rubber therebetween, one of the plates being apertured for the injection of the composition.
