Abstract

1,177,493. Coating apparatus. BOSTIK Ltd. 30 March, 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 14331/ 66. Heading B2L. Apparatus for applying adhesive composition to a workpiece W comprises a casing 22 provided with a generally semi-cylindrical recess 24; an applying wheel 20 having a circumferential surface 21 provided with at least one indentation 69 and mounted in the recess 24 for rotation about an axis eccentrically of the recess, the surface of the wheel bounding a wedge-shaped cavity 23 and having a portion protruding from the recess; a doctor bar 26 engaging the surface of the applying wheel adjacent a locality 79 of the cavity 23 where the applying wheel surface leaves the recess; a supplying device 15 to supply adhesive composition to the cavity and a means located within the cavity and responsive to the amount of adhesive composition in the cavity to control operation of the supply device. The latter means is preferably a vane 52 movement of which operates a micro-switch 62 Which controls operation of a clutch C driving wheels 42, 44 for feeding solid adhesive rod R to the casing 22. Casing 22 is heated so that the adhesive melts and flows via a bore 30 and groove 70 in one face of recess 23 to the locality 79. A further small groove 71 feeds adhesive to the bearing bush 77 for lubrication purposes. In use, rotation of the wheel 20 tends to draw adhesive along the groove 70 at a rate in excess of that at which it is supplied from the supplying device so that the adhesive in locality 79 is at a higher pressure than atmospheric. The adhesive is picked up by the wheel 20 from the locality 79 and by adjustment of the bar 26 the surface of the Wheel is wiped free of excess adhesive. The adhesive in the indentations 79 however expands on being released from the recess and becomes applied to the workpiece W in a pattern corresponding to that of the indentations in the wheel. A stringer roll 28 and a co-operating doctor bar 29 clear the wheel 20 from any adhesive remaining thereon.
