Abstract

1,174,759. Cable terminations. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 15 Jan., 1969, No. 2328/69. Addition to 1,140,740. Heading H2E. A metal-sheathed mineral insulated cable 1 is terminated by a metal sealing pot 6 having an internal bore, part 7 of which is tapered, and a complementarily tapering metal collar 10, in which at least one longitudinal slot extends over part, but not the whole, of its length. Preferably, two diametrically opposite slots 17 extend through the whole thickness of the collar from its narrow end to a point spaced from its wide end. The pot 6 and the collar 10 are placed over the cut-back end of the cable, and are urged axially towards one another until the collar wedges the pot firmly on the cable, the slot(s) giving the collar the necessary resilience. The pot is then filled with sealing compound 13 and covered with a sealing disc 15, an insulating sleeve 14 being provided around an adjacent length of conductor tail 5. Either surface of the collar, and the tapered surface of the pot may be serrated or otherwise roughened. The invention is particularly applicable to Cu- and Al-sheathed cables of small diameter, and the metal of pot and collar is preferably the same as that of the cable sheath.
