Abstract
1,171,739. Microporous rubber articles with foam core; solid tyres. CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE A.G. 20 Sept., 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 44926/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B7] Articles e.g. tyres of rubber or synthetic elastomer with a porous core and a microporous outer layer, the outer layer comprising <SP>1</SP>/ 10 -<SP>2</SP>/ 3 of the radial cross-section, are made from a mixture of elastomer and blowing agent. A mould of volume 10-20% less than that of the desired article is filled with a blank of elastomer-blowing agent mixture. After closing the mould it is heated so that the outer layer of elastomer is cross-linked and the core and blowing agent are unaffected. The partially cross-linked blank is removed from the mould and heated again to decompose the blowing agent and cross-link the rest of the elastomer. The resulting article has a foamed core, and a transition zone of decreasing porosity leading to the outer layer in which the bubbles are not visible to the naked eyes. Non-porous areas may be provided in the outer layer of the article by incorporating sections of elastomer without blowing agent in the mould, these sections being no thicker than the thickness of the outer layer in the formed article. The process can be used to make tyres for vehicle wheels, caterpillar track guide wheels and and rollers.
