An expanded synthetic plastics material is made from a synthetic plastics material and not more than 55% by volume of a porous mineral filler, the weight per unit volume of the filler being not more than twice that of the expanded material. The materials exemplified are (1) a mixture of polyvinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate, ammonium carbonate, azo-bisisobutyronitrile and foamed vermiculite; (2) polystyrene, azobisisobutyronitrile, ammonium carbonate, ethyl alcohol and foamed perlite; (3) a polyester, toluene di-isocyanate, triethylamine, water and keramsite gravel; and (4) phenolic novolac, hexamethylene tetramine, nitrile rubber, sulphur, azo-bisisobutyronitrile and two different foamed perlites.
