Abstract

[Also in Division H1] An electromagnetic control device comprises a coil 13 which is disposed within a housing 1 and surrounds both an armature 3 and an armature guide 2, the latter being secured to the housing end wall 25, an outer casing 20 which encloses the housing and contains therein a viscous liquid 4, such as oil, a spring 26 which tends to bias the armature away from the end wall 25, and ports 5 which are formed in one end of each of both the armature and guide and serve to permit air trapped within the space defined by the armature and the guide to escape therefrom and into the uppermost part 9 of the casing 20, as well as to dampen the relative motion between the armature and guide. Alternatively, one of the armature ports 5, or a further port formed therein, may be provided with a spring-loaded ball valve closure member (Fig. 2, not shown), in order to vary the damping action in dependence upon the direction of motion of the armature. A rod 23, extending from the armature and out of the casing, can be made to directly actuate a valve member (Fig. 3, not shown), or there may be provided a bell crank arrangement between the armature and valve member (Fig. 4, not shown), the rod 23 being dispensed with in the latter case and the bell crank extending out of the casing through a membrane (10).
