Abstract

1,159,215. Polypivalolactone films. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 April, 1967, No. 19152/67. Heading B5B. Polypivalolactone films consisting of at least 75% by weight of structural units of formula -O-CH 2 -C(CH 3 ) 2 -COO-, are prepared by extruding a melt through a longitudinal slit and drawing the extruded melt out in a ratio between 5 : 1 and 500 : 1 to a film preferably not thicker than 0À5 mm., and cooling the film by directing a current of gas on to one side of the film, the other side of the film being pressed by the gas against the surface of a cooling roll preferably maintained below 150‹ C. After cooling the film may be stretched and/or fibrillated according to conventional methods. Copolymers containing polypivalolactones and up to 25% of other polymers such as polyamides, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyolefins may also be used.
