Abstract

1,148,321. Welding by fusion. LA SOUDURE ELECTRIQUE AUTOGENE, PROCEDES ARCOS. 12 April, 1966 [12 April, 1965], No. 16045/66. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] A cobalt base alloy, for making a welding electrode or for flame surfacing, comprises and optionally impurities such as the elements being so chosen that the sum % Fe+2 x % Al+0À45 x % Ti+0À3 x % Mn is less than 6. The alloy may be used as a bare wire or for coated or cored electrodes. For a coated or cored electrode for depositing " Stellite " (R.T.M.) alloys the amount of Cr with respect to the total electrode should be 25-35%, W should be 3-15% and the C should be 0À5-8%. The Cr may be supplied as Cr 3 C 2 , metallic Cr or oxides thereof, the W as WC, W 2 C metallic W or oxides thereof and the carbon as graphite. When the elements are present as oxides a reducing agent (Al, Mg, Si or C) must be included and the yield of Co may be increased to 200% or even 250% by inclusion of powdered Co. The tubular cored electrodes may be flattened to decrease penetration into the parts being surfaced and coated electrodes may have at least one spiral wire embedded in the coating and flush with the surface thereof. The use of the alloy for flame surfacing by gas welding is also disclosed.
