Abstract

Woven or knitted fabrics consisting of or containing cellulose acetate threads or yarns having drip-dry properties and good dimensional stability are produced by a process comprising the steps of (a) washing out any size from the fabric, e.g. with soap or a condensation product of ethylene oxide and lauryl alcohol, removing excess desizing liquid and drying, (b) passing the fabric, if woven, over a stenter with overfeed and light steaming, (c) dyeing or printing, e.g. with solid fast acid or dispersed dye, washing, drying, applying a softening finish, e.g. a condensation product of a long chain fatty acid with ethylene oxide, further drying with overfeed and light steaming, (d) steam decatisation and (e) where necessary breaking, the process steps being carried out in the substantial absence of any tensile force on the fabric, and the fabric being pebbled before or after step (a). The pebbling may be carried out on one or both surfaces of the fabric and may be effected at a temperature of 80 DEG -150 DEG C. and under a pressure of about 6 tons for a calendar having a 150 cm bed. Fabrics having a special appearance may be produced by treating fabrics having in the warp or in the weft or in both the warp and the weft yarns of irregular count. Yarns in which the slubs are situated at irregular intervals may be used in the production of the fabrics.
