An electric water heater as described in Specification 991,409 is modified in that the pressure differential required for displacing the diaphragm is derived from a flow-detecting means inserted between the inlet valve and the heater. The flow detector described comprises a Venturi device and one side of the diaphragm is connected to a point upstream of the constriction and the other side is connected to a point slightly downstream of the Venturi throat.
