Abstract

Narrowing and widening mechanism for a flat bed machine comprises a series of transfer points 13 adapted to be lowered into engagement with the needles which are then operated in conjunction with the points to transfer the loops to or receive the loops from the points for the purpose of narrowing or widening the fabric being knitted. To this end the points 13 are mounted on a slide 12, Figs. 4 and 9 (not shown) which raises or lowers them into contact with the needles. The slide 12 is attached to a rack 11 driven by rack and pinion mechanism 22 ... 26 operated by a cam on the cam shaft to advance and retract the points. The slide 12 is also supported in a block 10 which is advanced by pawl and ratchet mechanism 7, 8 to pivot the points and mechanism into a position whereby the narrowing or widening can be effected. Two cam shafts are provided in the machine one of which is effective under pattern control to effect narrowing and the other of which effects widening. Lead screws 6 are provided for traversing the blocks 10 under cam control to effect the shogging movement of the points for lateral transfer of the loops and lead screws 32 are provided for shogging the needle selecting mechanism 34 ... 36 which functions to select the needles for the loop transferring operations in either a widening or narrowing direction.
