Abstract
<PICT:1025771/C1/1> In an activated sludge process the volume of return sludge is governed by the rate of influx of raw sewage. This control may be achieved by electric or mechanical means and the return of sludge is by weirs, pumps or air lifts. The settling tank 11 has an adjustable sludge outlet 16 which regulates the level in the well 14 from which sludge is taken by water wheel 13 for the return sludge channel 12. The adjustment of the outlet 16 is governed by the float 22 which responds to the level in the influent channel 10.
