Abstract
1,009,476. Locking nuts. C. H. HANFLAND. May 28, 1962, [May, 26, 1961] No. 20376/62. Heading F2H. A locking nut, which may be in the form of a ring, Figs. 3, 4, has an annular groove 1<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3a, near the bearing face, with uniformlyspaced slots 6<SP>1</SP> in the bottom of the groove extending into the nut bore. The slots have a part-circular form as indicated by the broken line arcs in Fig. 3 and they may be cut by a rotating saw or milling cutter. Tightening of the nut causes deforming of the threads in the areas which join the main body and the sprung bearing-flange formed by the groove 1<SP>1</SP>. A separately made flange may be welded to the nut to form the groove. The portions k 1 <SP>1</SP> &c., Fig. 4, of the flange between the joining areas may be bent up. The flange may be hollowed, with an internal surface which is frusto-conical, Fig. 5 (not shown).
