Abstract

[Also in Division A2] In a freeze-drying apparatus, volatile constituents, e.g. aroma imparting substances, from the product 12 being freeze dried in a chamber 1 are recovered by collection in liquid or solid form in low temperature condensers 2 . . . 5 interconnected by valved pipes. The condensers are operated at consecutively lower temperature levels before connection to the vacuum pump 6. Alternatively condensation may be performed in chambers which are maintained at consecutively rising pressure stages, the cooled condensing surfaces therein being maintained at the same temperature.
