Abstract

A water-insoluble derivative of carboxymethyl cellulose is made by adjusting the pH of a salt-contaminated sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to 4.5-5.5, thereby generating a plurality of free carboxyl groups, heating the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose at a temperature in excess of 100 DEG C. to condense hydroxyl groups with a sufficient proportion of the free carboxylic acid groups to render the derivative insoluble in water, and washing the derivative in water. The heating temperature is preferably 115-130 DEG C. The insolubilization resulting from the formation of intermolecular or intra-molecular ester groups, enables the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to be freed from by-products formed in its synthesis, by water-washing only, without use of alcohol. The insolubilized material may be stored as such or may be treated with heated caustic soda solution to form a solution of purified sodium carboxymethyl cellulose
