Abstract

1,085,386. Shaft seals. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 3, 1966 [June 4, 1965], No. 23970/65. Heading F2B. Shaft sealing means to reduce loss from a turbo-generator cylinder 2 of nitrogen supplied thereto when shutting-down comprises inner -and outer annular pockets in each of the shaft glands 7, the outer pockets 8 being kept at a pressure below atmospheric and the inner pockets 9 being supplied with gas, preferably nitrogen, at a pressure above that of the outer pockets but less than that in the cylinder 2, whereby air A is drawn inwardly into the outer pockets and gas N from the inner pockets together with nitrogen E escaping from the cylinder is drawn outwardly into the outer pockets which are connected to a nitrogen recovery system. The outer pockets 8 are connected by pipes 14 and 15 to the suction side of a gas circulator 19 discharging air laden nitrogen to a gas clean-up plant 24 from which nitrogen is fed via pipes 12 and 13 to the inner pockets 9 at a pressure slightly less than that of the nitrogen supplied to the cylinder 2.
