1,083,264. Centrifugal separator; filter for gases. A. HORNKOHL [trading as AUGUST HORNKOHL KOMM GES]. Nov. 27, 1964 [Nov. 27, 1963], No, 48353/64. Headings BIT and B2P. A separator for removing solid or liquid particles from a flowing gas comprises a housing 1 adapted to be placed between two pipes in a gas feed line and a hollow member 2 having on its outer surface a screw blade 3 which contacts, or almost contacts, the inner surface of the housing 1 to form a helical passage 4 closed at its downstream end by a baffle plate 5 which directs the gas stream via a slot 6 into the interior space 8 of the member 2, the space 8 being in communication with an outlet 7 for the cleaned gas. A filter 12 made of sintered metal is mounted within the member 2 with its interior communicating with the outlet 7. The space 8 is closed at its end by a cover 10 having perforations 9 for the passage of the separated particles into a sump chamber 11 from which they may be removed through a valve 16. An inlet 13 is provided for the gas stream, the inlet 13 and outlet 7 being screw threaded internally for receiving the ends of the gas pipes. A check valve is shown at 15 to control the flow of gas through the separator. The housing 1 may be made of transparent material and the member 2 may be made of metal or synthetic plastic material. In operation, centrifugal separation of the particles from the gas stream takes place in the helical passage 4. The gas stream is deflected by the baffle plate 5 into the interior 8 of the member 2 and flows through the filter 12 towards the outlet 7. The separated particles are halted by the plate 5 and enter the interior 8 of the member 2. Any particles entrained by the gas stream are separated by the filter 12. The particles which have entered the interior 8 of the member 2 or which eventually drop from the filter pass through the slots 9 into the sump chamber 11.
