Abstract

1,079,085. Controlling burners. EMERSON ELECTRIC CO. Jan. 12, 1966 [Feb. 1, 1965], No. 1535/66. Heading F4T. A burner control system comprises a relay 16 which is energized at starting to close its contacts 18, 20 by a silicon controlled rectifier 28 controlled by a semi-conductor 26 responsive to the light of the burner flame. The relay 16 is energized to hold its contacts 18, 20 closed during burner operation by a branch circuit 86 fed from a tapping on the mains transformer. When a space thermostat 14 closes, the S.C.R. fires since the resistance of the semi-conductor 26 is high and consequently the relay 16 closes the contacts 18 to energize igniter electrodes 36 and a motor 12 supplying fuel and air to the burner. If ignition succeeds the resistance of the semi-conductor 26 drops and consequently the S.C.R. ceases to conduct but the relay is held closed by the branch circuit 86. If ignition fails the S.C.R. continues to conduct and the circuit is eventually de-energized by a manual reset bimetal safety switch 22 heated by a resistance 24 included in the S.C.R. circuit. If the flame fails during burner operation the starting sequence is carried out.
