Abstract

1,073,755. Ventilating engine crank-cases. WALKER MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 10, 1964 [Sept. 13, 1963], No. 37146/64. Heading F1B. In a crank-case ventilation system in which a coil spring is arranged inside a blowby passage, the coils are spaced when the spring element is uncompressed to allow gas flow and the coils engage one another to prevent gas flow when the spring is compressed by fluid pressure. During normal engine operation blowby gases pass via conduit 30 in the direction of arrow 74 through the central cavity 60 of coil spring 56 and thence via passage 30 to air filter (20), Fig. 1 (not shown). If an induction backfire occurs the flame pressure front strikes cap 62 and compresses spring 56 to extinguish the backfire. Passage 32 communicates with inductor passage 28 and orifice 42, which is kept clear of obstruction by plunger 50, limits the blowby flow to passage 32 and thereby regulates the fuel/air ratio.
