Abstract

1,64,323. Zoom lenses. RANK PRECISION INDUSTRIES Ltd., [trading as RANK ORGANISATION RANK TAYLOR HOBSON DIVISION]. Sept.10, 1963 [Sept. 14, 1962], No.35088/62. Heading G2J. The objective, which is corrected for spherical and chromatic aberrations, coma, astigmatism, field curvature and distortion has four members LA, LB, LC, LD in which (a) LA and LD are convergent and stationary, (b) Lc and LD are divergent and movable, (c) the equivalent focal lengths fB and fc respectively of members LB and Lc lie numerically respectively between 4 and 8 and 5 and 10 times the minimum value of the ratio of the equivalent focal length of the objective to the f - number thereof e.g. fB is 5À88 and fc is 7À27 times such minimum value, (d) LB consists of a divergent simple meniscus component with its surfaces R8, R9 convex to the front followed by a divergent compound component and performing in the range of variation a total axial movement lying numerically between 1À5fB and 2À5fB e.g. 1À994fB, (e) Lc consists of a doublet component having a front surface R14 concave to the front with a radius of curvature lying numerically between 0À5 fc and 1À0 fc e.g. 0À72 fc and moves a total distance between 0À25 fc and 0À5 fc, e.g. 0À305 fc and (f) the minimum separation between LB and Lc occurs when the equivalent focal length of the objective is greater than half its maximum value in the range of variation e. g. is 0À745 times such value. The compound component of LB consists of a triplet component having a convergent element between two divergent elements. The member LA is moved for focusing at different object distances. The member LD may take various forms, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), in some of which there is an aspheric surface such as R23, and an achromatic doublet component may be provided interchangeably behind the member LD to increase the values of equivalent focal length of the objective throughout the range of variation e. g. without the additional doublet the range may be from a minimum Fo to 10Fo, with a particular added doublet Fig. 5 (not shown) the range is 1À5 Fo to 15 Fo and in another example, Fig. 6 (not shown) it is 2 Fo to 20 Fo. Optical data are given for four examples of objective and two examples of supplementary achromatic doublets.
