Abstract

1,049,887. Ball joints. O. & S. BEARING & MFG. CO. Oct. 2, 1963, No. 38771/63. Heading E2F A ball and socket joint, particularly for the steering gear of a motor vehicle comprises a ball 10 with shank 12 and a bearing ring insert 26 having an outer annular re-entrant recess 28 and being disposed between the ball andsocket at the stud end of the ball. The insert 26,is of resilient synthetic plastic material, and a bearing element 30 of lubricant impregnated fibrous material is positionedbetweenthe ball and socket at the other end of the ball. Both the insert. 26 and the element 30 have inner and outer surfaces complementary to the ball and socket. The other end of the socket is sealed by a closure, disc which holds the parts underaxial pressure. The stud end of the socket has a flange 24 extending inwardly. and is sealed by a member 46, 48 having a neck; portion stretched around, the shank and a skirt portion with a bead edging fitting into theannular recessbelow the flange. The bearing ring: insert may be spaced from the socket wall.
