Abstract

Self-supporting blocks of insulating material foruse alongside load-bearing walls with an intervening air cavity are made of expanded polystyrene with a capping of pure plaster. Pref. the polystyrene block features undercut channels into which a cast plaster cap becomes mechanically keyed. Pref. the plaster cap extends partly down the edges of the expanded core and also provides complementary lateral tongue and groove profiles for semi-positive interlocking of adjacent blocks, in a common wall. After being cast on to the expanded polystyrene blocks the plaster cap is pref. stoved or otherwise dried to reduce its moisture content to about 5%. Typically the composite blocks 660 mm long, 500 mm tall, and 100 mm thick, with an apparent density of approx. 27 kg/m3.
