Abstract
The numerically-controlled lathe has a fixed headstock with chuck and spindle coupled to a dc motor supplied via an electronic regulator. Independent dc motors supplied via electronic regulators drive saddle and cross-slide, and electronic controls in a cubicle operate the regulators to a programme. A second headstock (30) is mounted on an extension of the bed (2) its drive being controlled by the cubicle via the regulator for the motor of the first headstock spindle (5). This works in conjunction with a second set of tools on the cross-slide (16). When the cycle of operations by the first headstock is complete, the appropriate command signals are passed to the second spindle (31) and to the same saddle (4) and cross-slide.
