Abstract

In a new process for detecting a specified antigen possibly present in a biological specimen of animal origin, (a) the specimen is mixed with a suspension of a particle which is coupled with protein A and which is sensitised with an antibody specific for the antigen in such a way that the Fc fragment of the antibody is bound to the protein A coupled with the particle; and (b), in the presence of the specified antigen, an agglutination occurs. Suspensions of particles coupled with protein A and sensitised with antibodies as indicated above are new and claimed. Used for detection and quantitative determination (e.g. by serial dilution techniques) of biologically significant macromolecules, esp. rheumatoid factors, e.g. in the diagnosis of disease. The determination can readily be carried out by relatively unqualified personnel.
