Abstract

A size grading machine for carrots and similar, conically tapered vegetables comprises several rotary screening reels in succession, the annular screen of each reel being made up of spaced, parallel, longitudinal rods. The gaps between the rods is greater each successive reel. On a rising arc of each reel, and on a centr3-line at about 45 deg. to the horizontal which extends through the horizontal axis of the reel, is the horizontal axis of rotation of a circular brush. The brush is outside the screening rods and its flexible bristles are tangential to the screen surface. The brush rotates in the opposite direction to the reel with a bristle tip speed slightly in excess of the exterior surface speed of the reel. The machine is for sorting carrots etc. into several size ranges. Tapered vegetables such as carrots tend to become jammed between reel rods. The brushes push these carrots back into the reel for sorting. A single reel can be removed and replaced without disturbing adjacent reels.

Description

The present invention relates to a sorting machine in particular carrots and, in general, objects of elongated shape and, at least partially, conical, ovoid or prismatic.

More particularly, the sorting machine, according to the invention, consists of aligned drums rotating around their longitudinal axes and whose lateral surfaces are formed by longitudinal bars regularly distributed around the periphery of each drum. The objects to be sorted are placed in the drums andD depending on the distance between the bars, whether or not they fall from the drum.

With several aligned drums whose distances between bars decrease, a selective sorting is obtained. In drum machines of this kind, conical objects, the part of which with a small cross section passes between two bars, but not the part with a large section, can prick between two bars and get caught in it The sorting operation becomes inoperative for stitched objects. Until now, this drawback has hampered the use of these machines, the only known solution for detaching bitten objects consisting in stopping the machine and pushing the bited objects away by hand.

An object of the invention is to provide a machine which overcomes this drawback, by allowing the repelling of the bitten objects automatically without stopping the machine, which then becomes much more profitable.

Another object of the invention consists in providing means allowing the quick and easy exchange of the drums to change the conditions of the sorting operations.

In the following, we will take, as an example of elongated conical objects, carrots whose processing presents an additional difficulty resulting from the fact that they are fragile and that it is necessary to avoid breaking them.

According to a characteristic of the invention, there is provided a machine for sorting elongated conical, ovoid or prismatic objects consisting of barrel drums, in which, on the rising part of the drum, approximately in the direction making an angle of 450 towards above with respect to the axis of the drum, a flexible bristle brush is mounted practically tangent to the drum and rotating in the opposite direction thereof with a slightly higher tangential speed.

According to another characteristic, the drums are suspended from belts driven in rotation, the drums being held in place transversely by two series of rollers each arranged on each side and the rollers being applied to the belts, practically at the points of tangency of the belts and drums, one of the series of rollers being mounted at the ends of the arms secured to a longitudinal shaft which can rotate to separate the rollers and allow each drum to be freed individually from its drive belts.

The characteristics of the invention mentioned above, as well as others, will appear more clearly on reading the following description of an exemplary embodiment, said description being made in relation to the accompanying drawings, among which:
Fig. 1 is an end view of the sorting machine according to the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a schematic elevation view of the machine of FIG. 1.

The sorting machine consists of a frame 1 which supports, by means of appropriate bearings, a horizontal shaft 2, placed at the top of the frame and occupying practically the entire length of the machine. From place to place, on the shaft 2, pulleys 3 are mounted on which belts 4 to 9 pass which support horizontal cylinders or drums 10 to 12, respectively. In fact, the drum 10 is supported, at its two ends, respectively by the belts 4 and 5, the drum 11 by the belts 6 and 7, and the drum 12 by the belts 8 and 9. The shaft 2 is driven in rotation by a chain 13, itself driven by an electric motor 14 mounted on the frame 1.

Each drum is made up of two hoops connected by longitudinal bars. Thus, the drum 10 is constituted by the hoops 15, 16 and the bars 17, the drum 11 of the hoops 18, 19 and the bars 20, and the drum 12 of the hoops 21, 22 and the bars 23. The drums are aligned without intervals between them, that is to say that the hoop 16 is adjacent to the hoop 18 and the hoop 19 adjacent to the hoop 21. In practice, the belts 4 to 9 are respectively in contact with the hoops 15, 16, 18, 19, 21 and 22. The mutual distances between the bars of a drum are constant for a drum and define the sorting dimension.

To obtain a gradual sorting, when the carrots pass successively through the drums 10, 11 and 12, the bars 17 are chosen that are less spaced than the bars 20, which are themselves less spaced than the bars 23.

As shown in Fig. 2, the shaft 2 is slightly inclined down from the pulley 3 which carries the belt 4 to that which carries the belt 9. The cores to be sorted are poured into a tray 24 whose internal edge 25 is in a semicircle adjacent to the hoop 15. The shaft 2 being inclined, the common axis of the cylinders is also so that the carrots entering the drum 10 by 15 are slowly driven towards the drum 11, then the drum 12. As and as the carrots advance in the drum 10, the smallest of them fall between the bars 17 and are guided by deflectors 26 towards an appropriate receiving tank. Among the cores which have reached the drum 11, a part falls through the bars 20 and is guided by another guide 26 towards a receiving tank. Likewise, part of the remaining carrots falls through the bars 23. The rest leaves through the hoop 22 and falls through a hopper 27 into an appropriate tank.

A roller 27, whose axis is perpendicular to the axis 28 of rotation of the drums and whose distance from the axis 28 is equal to the radius of the drums, is mounted on a bracket 29, integral with the frame 1, so that the bearing surface of 27 rolls on the edge of the hoop 22, thus keeping all the drums parallel to the shaft 2. In fact, as the shaft 2 is inclined, the drums would tend to fall around 26, if the roller 27 did not retain them.

As shown in Fig. l, the pile of cores 30 tends to follow the rotational movement of the drums, in the direction of arrow F1, the upper cores falling in a continuous movement as indicated by the arrows F2. In addition, certain cores 31 are pricked between the bars and, without particular precautions, could remain trapped and even prevent the sorting from taking place correctly.

This is why the machine is completed by cylindrical brushes 32, 33 and 34, associated respectively with the drums 10, 11 and 12. The brushes 32 to 34 are mounted on a common axis 35. As shown in FIG. 1, the angle of the segment joining the axis 28 to the axis 35 with the horizontal plane is approximately 450. Furthermore, the brushes are located between the horizontal plane of the axis 28 and the highest generator of drums and the side where the carrots go up with the drums. The cylinders described by the ends of the bristles of the brushes are practically tangent to the cylinders of the drums.

In practice, when the drums rotate, the pile of carrots driven by the rotation occupies transversely a segment of a circle whose rope is oblique. The line of tangency between the brushes and the drums is chosen slightly above the highest line of the pile of carrots. In this way, the stuck carrots repelled by the brushes are a little above the heap of carrots which, on the one hand, facilitates the action of the brushes and, on the other hand, ensures that the carrots fall from a low height on the pile of carrots and do not break when falling.

The brushes 32 to 33 rotate in a direction such that at the point of tangency, their tangential speed has the same direction as that of the drums. In addition, according to the invention, the tangential speed of the brushes is chosen to be slightly higher than that of the drums. Indeed, as shown in FIG. 1, the bristles of the brushes then tend to curl in spirals, the ends of the brushes being behind the points of attachment to the hub, before meeting the pitted carrots. I1 results in an inward thrust component of the drums, as indicated by the arrows F3. Preferably, the tangential speed of the brushes is chosen to be 15% higher than that of the drums. The diameter of the brushes can be of the order of 30 cm for drum diameters of the order of 50 cm.

As an indication, the bristles of the brushes 32 to 34 must be relatively flexible and can be made of "Nylon" and have a diameter of the order of 0.4 to 0.5 mm, in the case of an application for sorting carrots.

In Fig. 1, it has been shown, by way of example, how the axis 35 of the brushes could be driven by a pinion 36, itself driven by a chain 37 which passes successively over a pinion 38 mounted on the shaft 2 and two tensioning pinions 39 and 40 mounted on the frame 1. The point of attack of the chain 37 and of the pinion 36 is of course on the other side of the drums to rotate the brushes in the right direction. The ratios of the diameters of the pinions 36 and 38 are chosen to obtain the desired difference in tangential speeds.

As still shown in FIG. 1, the drums are held transversely in place by rollers 41 and 42 which respectively support the belts 4 to 9, the support points being in the zone of the points of tangency of the belts with the various hoops.

The rollers 41 are mounted on fixed brackets 43 secured to the frame. The rollers 42 are mounted at the ends of corresponding arms 44, the other ends of which are secured to an axis 45 which can rotate in bearings 46 secured to the frame 1 Normally, the shaft 45 is locked in position so that the rollers 42 are press on the belts. When we want to change a drum, for example to change the sorting characteristics, we unlock the shaft 45 by spreading the rollers 42, then we slide the belts of the cylinder concerned onto the hoops of neighboring drums, which frees the drum. As belts 4 and 9 cannot be moved on a neighboring drum, fixed lower half-hoops 47 and 25 (which extends tray 24) are provided, at each end to receive belts 4 and 9 respectively in case of change drums 10 or 12.
