Abstract
A catalytic exhaust gas purifier for the engines of motor vehicles consists of an outer shell of stainless heat-resisting steel in which the catalyst carrier is guided by support rings at each end. Six strips of tantalum locate these rings, the free ends of three of them being anchored at the inlet end and those of three others at the outlet end of the shell. This achieves an automatic compensation for the differential thermal expansion of purifier shell and catalyst carrier. The life of the catalyst and its carrier is thus improved.
