Abstract
Plant for mfg. float glass using a glass tank furnace and a float chamber, contg. molten metal, followed by a gas cushion and a cooling furnace for the glass sheet. Cooling devices are located at the outlet end of the float chamber for the uniform and intensive cooling of the glass sheet. The sheet is pref. intensively cooled over a length (A) of 1/30 to 1/15 th of the length of the float chamber and at min 5 degrees C/second/mm of glass thickness. Two inductors are pref. located in the intensive cooling zone to produce electromagnetic fields directed against each other and moving the metal in the float chamber. Cooling the glass sheet to a sufficiently low temp. before it reaches the rollers in the cooling furnace, so the underside of the sheet is hard enough to prevent its damage by the rollers. The glass may have an alkali-aluminosilicate compsn.
