Abstract

The I-section composite steel and concrete beam has concrete flanges (A, B) with a steel lattice girder (10) as the web. The head (10') and foot (10") of the lattice girder (10) are embedded in the concrete flanges (A, B). The lattice girder can be built up from any suitable section e.g. angle iron, 'T' sections or tubes and has a horizontal member at the head and foot joined by zig-zag bracing in a vertical plane. The head and foot of the girder are cast into the concrete flange-slabs and may penetrate into the slabs by between one third and one half of the slab thickness.
