Abstract

A pastelike compsn. for mfr. of positive electrodes for air-depolarised primary cells having a viscous electrolyte comprises synthetic gamma-MnO2, C and a conductive alkaline soln. The paste may also include Mn ore (beta-MnO2). The paste pref. contains 33-67 wt.% synthetic gamma-MnO2, 12-40% C and 20-28% KOH soln. Alternatively, it contains 16-33% synthetic MnO2, 17-34% Mn ore, 12-40% C and 20-28% KOH soln. The paste is mfrd. into electrodes having a porosity of 8.5-40%. The cells have a discharge voltage about 0.25V higher than similar cells using Mn ore catalyst, and a working life, 3-4 times longer, without use of expensive noble metal catalyst. Where some Mn ore is used, discharge voltage is not so high, but increase in capacity is retained. Electrodes discharged at high current density for prolonged intermittent periods had capacities up to 2400 min.
