Abstract

An adhesive (e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene) is applied (e.g. by a nozzle and scraper, a spray, or by fusing a particle layer or film) to one surface of a substrate (e.g. canvas, hessian, non woven fabric) which is then advanced together with an existing pile fabric (having pref. a latex adhesive sprayed onto the tips of the pile fibres) such that the substrate adheres to the tips of the pile fibres of the pile fabric. The pile fibres are then cut between the substrate and the backing web of the pile fabric (e.g. a woven or tufted carpet) so that the cut pile fibres form a pile on the substrate and a piled material is produced. Pref. the substrate and pile fabric are dried before cutting. The pile material is cheap and quick to produce.
