Abstract

A tufted fabric is formed by applying a softened thermoplastic film (e.g. polypropylene, polyamide, polyvinyl, polacrylic, or polyurethane resin) under pressure (e.g. 0.70-35.15 kg/cm2) to the surface of a pile fabric (e.g. a carpet having a wool pile) such that the tips of the pile fibres adhere to the plastic film. The pile fibres are then cut between the plastic film and the backing web of the pile fabric to product a tufted fabric with the plastic film forming the backing. Pref. the tufted fabric is subsequently treated into steam to dress the pile.
