Abstract

The state of the surface of a coating such as the paint-work on a motor vehicle body is measured to quantify a criterion in comparison with visual observation. A case (1) with flexible base (2) and handle (8) is placed against the bodywork (C) of a motor vehicle. One branch (A) of the case contains a grid (6) with ten numbered lines spaced in geometric progression and which is illuminated from behind frosted glass (5) by a lamp (4) or electronic flash powered from a battery (3). The other branch (B) comprises, photographic equipment (7) placed to receive the reflected light rays. From the photographic film quality is assessed by the number of the first distinct line from the hazy lines.
