Abstract
Curable resin binder, esp. for glass fibre fleeces, is prepd. by (a) reacting a mixt. of formaldehyde and phenol in the presence of a calcium oxide or hydroxide catalyst, (b) cooling the prod. and (c) neutralising with a mixt. of phosphoric and sulphuric acids. This cures rapidly to prods. with good physical properties and low phenol content. The acid mixt. contains 5-30 eps. 10 wt. % phosphoric acid and 70-95 esp. 90 wt. % sulphuric acid. The binder pref. contains 0.5 wt. % free phenol, 0.5-8 wt. % lubricant, 0.1-1 wt. % silane, and sufficient water to give a solids content of 5-30 wt. %.
