Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction between phenol and formaldehyde is effected in the presence of an acidic catalyst and the reaction mixture is neutralized with an alkaline earth metal oxide to remove the acid without high-temperature treatment and produce the titled resin with each component well dispersed.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of phenol with formaldehyde is conducted, preferably at a molar ratio of 0.5W1.0 in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as oxalic acid, when necessary, other additives. The resultant reaction product is neutralized with an alkaline earth metal oxide and/or hydroxide by an amount of 2W20wt% based on the phenolic resin in the product to produce the objective resin.
