Abstract

Surface-sizing of paper is carried out using water-soluble salts of copolymers which has a K value of 30-55, made from (a) 50-90 pref. 50-80 wt.% of alpha-olefins containing 2-12C (b) 10.50% pref. 20-50% of acrylic and/or methacrylic acids, and (c) =30% pref. 0-20% of non-basic polymerisable cpds., by polymerising the monomers in soln. in 1-4C primary or secondary alcohols in the presence of free-radical initiators at pref. 60-130 degrees C and then diluting the soln. with an alkaline aq. soln. to give a 20-40% solids content. The solns. are suitable for sizing paper such in filler; the sizing gives good resistance to alkali and penetration by inks.
